CAMPING WITH YOUR DOG

DOGS ARE NO LONGER PERMITTED IN WELLINGTON NATIONAL PARK

The Department of Environment and Conservation advises that following the adoption of the Wellington National Park Management Plan, dogs are no longer permitted in the Wellington National Park and associated campsites including Potters Gorge, Honeymoon Pool, Gelcoat and Stones Brook.

Dogs (on a leash) are permitted at Stockton Lake (7km east of Collie).
Owners need to be aware that all State Forest, National Parks and nature reserves are baited four or more times a year and must be considered dangerous areas for pet dogs at all times. Baits are made from the 1080 poison and are extremely attractive to dogs. The baits will tempt both well trained dogs and fussy eaters. If you suspect your dog has taken a bait, induce vomiting and immediately seek veterinary attention. (For more information about fox baiting, contact the Department of Conservation and Land Management in Collie on ph 9734 1988).

Wellington Dam:

There are several beautiful campsites within this region. All are bush sites, with no showers or power. Campsites cannot be reserved.

Honeymoon Pool:
Honeymoon Pool is a picturesque camping and picnic area set deep in the Collie River Valley, on the banks of the Collie River. Set amongst the beautiful Yarri and graceful Peppermint trees, it is an ideal area for visitors and is centrally located to a number of other recreational sites.

Facilities include flushing toilets with universal access, wood barbecues, central rubbish pick up area, picnic tables and untreated tap water. The Wellington Dam Kiosk and Cafe is only a few kilometres away and stocks basic supplies, ice creams, hot food, etc. A campers kitchen is located at nearby Stones Brook campsite, only a short walk from the Honeymoon Pool campsites. Please note that Honeymoon Pool is designed for tents only; it is not suitable for caravans or larger camper trailers.

CALM have recently undertaken a redevelopment of the Honeymoon Pool area.
That area now comprises three campsites: Honeymoon Pool consisting of a day use picnic area and campsites 1-22; Stones Brook (14 campsites) , and Gelcoat with 11 campsites. All are within close proximity to each other.

Stones Brook Camping Area provides an additional 14 individual "fire free" camping sites, which means there are no fire rings provided. Please assist the management of this area by not lighting open fires. To replace the fire rings, CALM have provided a campers kitchen with free gas barbecues and gas pot boilers. This facility is a communal area for all users at this site, so please respect other campers using this facility.
The Gelcoat site, which is further downstream from Stones Camping Area, is also now open. This site has 11 individual camping sites and a communal fire ring. CALM plan to upgrade Gelcoat when further funding is available. Gelcoat is designed for small tents only. Caravans and camper trailers are not permitted.

Revegetation:
Since the upgrade of Honeymoon pool the native vegetation around the site has regenerated, so please remain on the paths and the cleared areas provided, and stay out of the fenced off areas.

If the fire danger is very high or extreme, all fires will be banned so it is advisable to pack a small gas bbq or gas camping stove.

Fees apply: From 3rd October 2006 camping fees will be $7.00 per night for adults; $5.00per night for concession card holders and $2 per night for school aged children under 16 years. CALM rangers collect the fees on a daily basis. Fees are cash only and include GST.

Swimming, fishing and canoeing all permitted. Anglers and Marroners require a fishing Licence. Fishing Licences are available from Post Offices (Collie Post Office open Monday to Friday only).

Access: From the north or west: River Road (a gravel road) off Wellington Weir Road. From the south, Falcon Road and Lennard Drive (a one way road for travel in a westerly direction only).

Potters Gorge:
This campsite is suitable for both tents and caravans. It is situated on the main water body of Wellington Dam, in a shady Jarrah and Marri forest setting.
Gas and wood barbecues provided, along with toilets and change rooms. Disabled access.
No showers or power available. An outdoor cold shower is available for rinsing off after swimming.
Swimming, canoeing and fishing all permitted. Easy access to the water for children.
Bookings are not taken, and the same camp fees apply as at Honeymoon Pool (see above).
Access: Turn off Coalfields Highway into Wellington Weir Road. Drive 10km along the bitumen road, and turn left at Tom Jones Drive. This leads to both the campground and day use area.

Glen Mervyn Dam:
Located 18km south of Collie on the Collie Preston Road, the water is used for irrigation and recreation purposes. Activities include waterskiing, swimming, fishing, picnicking and camping. Limited facilities, however toilets are provided.
Dogs, on a leash, are permitted. However owners need to be aware that fox baiting takes place in the region and baits are highly toxic to dogs.

Stockton Lake:
This area was once an open cut coal mine, but has since been abandoned and has filled with water. It is a popular spot for boating and water skiing. Basic facilities are provided (ie bbq and long drop toilets). No camp fees apply and bookings are not taken.
Whilst swimming is permitted, signs do warn that people swim at their own risk because, due to past mining activities, the water has a low pH level. Prolonged exposure should be avoided.
An attractive location in jarrah forest with lots of wildflowers in season.
Access: 7km east of Collie, off the Collie - Darkan Road.

Dogs, on a leash, are permitted. However owners need to be aware that fox baiting takes place in the region and baits are highly toxic to dogs.
